LIVERMORE, Calif., USA/ CAPELLE A/D IJSSEL, The Netherlands September 25, 2014  – Topcon Positioning Group announces the completion of the stakeout step in the making of the “facescape” project on the National Mall with Topcon technology, personnel and equipment.

Artist Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada is commissioned by the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery to create a 6-acre portrait that will be a composite of several different faces between the World War II and Lincoln memorials along the south side of the Reflecting Pool.  The project uses high-precision GNSS survey technology and MAGNET® Field software provided by Topcon to help create the portrait.

“We used five HiPer SR rovers connected to our TopNETlive RTK network service to acquire the precise corrections necessary to get the project done,” said Scott Langbein, Topcon director of product marketing.  “We basically redrew the contours of the artist’s conception in the field using stakes guided by Topcon GNSS technology — you might think of it as reverse surveying

“Volunteers from Clark Construction were able to learn the MAGNET Field system in just a couple of hours and went on to stakeout thousands of points and lines, which allowed the project to stay on schedule and maximize productivity,” said Langbein.

The facescape will be unveiled in a press event on October 1 and open to the general public on October 4.
