In bringing together ideas, people and concepts that will improve the built environment, the 2019 World Summit on Digital Built Environments was able to explore important topics like the digital twin, urban innovation and integrated ecosystems in great detail. Taking place over two days in Helsinki, Finland, representatives from Microsoft, Amazon and Google provided powerful keynote presentations, although the messages that speakers from companies large and small had to share were equally informative.
During the conference program, presenters from across Europe talked through smart city solutions they have created or adopted to help solve political, economic, social, technical, environmental and legal challenges that are often associated with the effort to enable truly sustainable cities. Other sessions focused on what it will mean to truly digitize the construction industry, but these are just a couple highlights from the event.
Speakers, attendees and organizers live tweeted quotes and pictures throughout the event to give everyone who wasn’t in Helsinki a sense of the discussions, learning and updates that were explored at the event. For plenty more direct quotes, videos and pictures, check out the #WDBE2019 hashtag.

Automation enters the construction industry in 3 waves: algorithm, augmentation and autonomy. And we prepare for it by investments in R&D, training our people, establishing centres of excellence and collaborating with start-ups & new partners. #wdbe2019 pic.twitter.com/iu3iFWLmBe

Digital twin for the built environment is not only the digital equivalent of the physical asset. Connection and exchange of information is also required: ”Making a living link, not a digital zombie” @cristina_savian #WDBE2019 pic.twitter.com/SJVpKhUkWn

How to stop built environment to kill our planet? asks @aapo_huovila. In LCA of smart city solutions should be taken into account e.g. the energy consumption of buildings before operation (50%) and electric vehicles (raw materials, CO2 of electricity, battery waste). #wdbe2019 pic.twitter.com/7CQgSQsLJM
