Leica updates Cyclone 3DR Point Cloud Software

Leica Cyclone 3DR is a point cloud processing and modeling software. Two new updates add new features including a point cloud classification, Pipe-to-Scan tool, and Floor Flatness/Floor Levelness routine.

What is Leica Cyclone 3DR?

Leica Cyclone 3DR is a point cloud processing and modeling software developed by Leica Geosystems. It was first released in 2018 and forms part of a suite of Cyclone products, which also include Leica TruView and Leica JetStream. The entire suite focuses on reality capture and digital construction workflows, while Cyclone 3DR translates raw scanning data into 3D deliverables.

Integrating Cyclone 3DR and other Cyclone products allows users to transition between different stages of point cloud processing, from data capture in the field to delivering high-quality models and analyses. For example, JetStream technology enables Cyclone 3DR to access and work with large point cloud datasets efficiently, streaming the data to Cyclone 3DR so that users can interact with vast point clouds in real time without the need to load entire datasets locally.
Cyclone 3DR targets multiple industries, including construction, surveying, architecture, and manufacturing. This is reflected in the different modules of Cyclone 3DR such as the clash-detection and as-built verification module. This module is meant for construction and industrial projects, while a terrain module and volume calculation module enable creating Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and performing earthwork volume calculations.

Which new features were added in Leica 3DR 2024.0?

This year saw two products of Cyclone 3DR. The first one, Leica 3DR 2024.0, was released in January. Leica Cyclone 3DR 2024.0 was the first release of the Plant Edition, which replaces the Tank Edition. One of the features included was the Scan to Pipe function that enables users to deliver piping models from any point cloud. How this feature works is explained in an online video.

Other new features included AI-based point cloud classification, improving the speed and accuracy of data analysis for large datasets. Enhanced BIM and surveying tools including tools for progress monitoring, and tunnel/road profile analysis enable smoother collaboration with BIM models and better field-to-office data processing.

What was added in Leica 3DR 2024.1?

In August 2024, Leica 3DR 2024.1 was released. This is a major release with new features and improvements to the product. These were discussed and demonstrated in an online webinar:

Floor Flatness/Floor Levelness routine

Targeted at North American users, Cyclone 3DR now includes a Floor Flatness/Floor Levelness routine that adheres to ASTM 1155 standards. ASTM E1155, “Standard Test Method for Determining FF Floor Flatness and FL Floor Levelness Numbers,” is a quantitative method of measuring floor surface profiles to obtain estimates of the floor's characteristic FF and FL numbers.

With this new feature for the construction market, Cyclone 3DR users can easily create their full suite of deliverables in Cyclone 3DR rather than requiring additional tools or products to produce discrete analysis.

Statistics tool

A new analysis tool to extract detailed tables and graphs from any analyzed object. This feature is useful to complete advanced analysis, in particular when it is necessary to prove a detailed distribution in the situation of a control relying on standards or a norm.

Point cloud classification updates

A new version of the point cloud classification engine provides 20% faster performance than Cyclone 3DR 2024.0, and a new Plant classification model dedicated to piping networks. For the first version of the model, the focus has been made for 6 different classes: Straight cylinders, Bend cylinders, Reducer cylinders, Connections Valves, and Undefined.
