We all like to look at point clouds. It’s no mystery why–there’s a mysterious ghostly quality to a lot of them. A beautiful point cloud can feel a lot like a pointillist or abstract-expressionist painting. They were designed to be functional tools, but they feel a lot like accidental art.
Or, sometimes, intentional art. ScanLAB has been using their lidar scanners as artistic tools for quite a while now. We are starting to see more initiatives like contests and books dedicated to showing off beautiful point clouds. It looks like the idea is spreading to unexpected places, too.
Case in point: this new Citroën ad that features a 3D model of a race car cruising along on a point cloud of a road. It’s functional, it’s art, and it’s well worth a look.
